First, many users CAN enter the physical channel number. Second, ALL users in your fringe area need to know the physical number in order to get the appropriate antennas. It is ESPECIALLY important to tell users if you analog and digital channels are on separate bands. For example, our analog 3 is actually digital 48. Our analog 49, which more or less does not exist unless you have a really really big antenna and a 0.5 dB preamp, is ALSO digital 48 (same physical stationa as analog 3, that is, 48-1 maps to 3-1 and 48-2 maps to 49-1).
