Unless it's otherwise mentioned or accounted for in the text, every item you
take, whether Backpack, Weapon, Special Item or Money is transferable between
books. For my part you should be able "Safekeep" any Items/Money/etc you want
after Book 1. During Book 2 you can assume that the King will have someone
toss your gear into the Royal Vault and assuming you make it to Book 3, the Kai
Monestary will have been at least partially restored, at which point you start
living there and can stow your extra stuff in rooms that used to belong to your
former Kai classmates like Spear Magnet or Kraan Bait.
Since you can store stuff at this level, you can assume that all the other
rules from later in the game also apply to you. For example, Spears,
Quarterstaffs and Broadsword are all considered to be Two-Handed Weapons which
means that they require both hands to use, which in turn means that you cannot
use a Shield with them. Also, you can have no more than 12 Special Items at
the most. At your discretion, certain small, temporary Items may not count
against this limit (you bought a Ticket to take a coach ride from Holmgard to
Ragadorn).
