This is an area where the rules appear to have evolved as the books went
along.
We can note that originally, mention of carrying Backpack Items from one
completed book to the next was conspicuous by its absence... however if
you stick to this as a rule, you'll eventually start seeing references in
the Magnakai books asking you if you have a particular backpack item (e.g.
Oede herb) that is only available in previous books... so it becomes
apparent that the rules have silently revised themselves. I remember being
a little bit put out by this when I was a teenager in the 1980s!
My preference is to retrospectively apply the rules from later books to the
earlier ones. (If nothing else, this allows you to keep a certain
concentrated Alether potion you find in Book 3 for use in Book 11 ;)
