One thing I'd mention is that from Book 3 onwards, the Maps you receive at the
beginning of each book probably no longer need to be noted as Special Items and
function like your Kai cloak tunic, items you wear or use but cannot truly be
lost or taken from you. As evidence of this, you are not given instructions to
avoid looking at your map at the front of Shadow on the Sand if you are
captured and all your Weapons, Special Items, Backpack Items and Gold Crowns
are taken from you.

This is an area where the rules appear to have evolved as the books went
along. We can note that originally, mention of carrying Backpack Items from one
completed book to the next was conspicuous by its absence... however if you
stick to this as a rule, you'll eventually start seeing references in the
Magnakai books asking you if you have a particular backpack item (e.g. Oede
herb) that is only available in previous books... so it becomes apparent that
the rules have silently revised themselves. I remember being a little bit put
out by this when I was a teenager in the 1980s!
My preference is to retrospectively apply the rules from later books to the
earlier ones. (If nothing else, this allows you to keep a certain concentrated
Alether potion you find in Book 3 for use in Book 11 ;)

Unless it's otherwise mentioned or accounted for in the text, every item you
take, whether Backpack, Weapon, Special Item or Money is transferable between
books. For my part you should be able "Safekeep" any Items/Money/etc you want
after Book 1. During Book 2 you can assume that the King will have someone
toss your gear into the Royal Vault and assuming you make it to Book 3, the Kai
Monestary will have been at least partially restored, at which point you start
living there and can stow your extra stuff in rooms that used to belong to your
former Kai classmates like Spear Magnet or Kraan Bait.

Since you can store stuff at this level, you can assume that all the other
rules from later in the game also apply to you. For example, Spears,
Quarterstaffs and Broadsword are all considered to be Two-Handed Weapons which
means that they require both hands to use, which in turn means that you cannot
use a Shield with them. Also, you can have no more than 12 Special Items at
the most. At your discretion, certain small, temporary Items may not count
against this limit (you bought a Ticket to take a coach ride from Holmgard to
Ragadorn).
