Hi Roslyn,
I should probably say that at this point I don’t know how easy it would be to
use Audible on your PC if you don’t have iTunes. (Audible existed before iTunes
became widespread, but both have evolved since then. Also, although I selected
Windows Media Player to be my default player for Audible on my PC, iTunes kept
coming up and wanting to play Audible audio books when I chose to play them on
my computer. There’s also, of course the fact that I have an iPhone which uses
iTunes for stuff.)
If your screen-reader is CURRENT – and I must emphasize CURRENT VERSION – then
iTunes on your PC is uisable. (At least I hope it is with NVDA. I know that it
is with JAWS2019.)

Roslyn,
There is a learning curve here. Are you familiar with Kindle, or Amazon, at
all? Audible is owned now by Amazon, who also own Kindle (eBooks, or electronic
books).
Browse around: www.amazon.com >; www.amazon.co.uk >;
www.audible.co.uk >;
www.audible.com >.
(You would primarily be using Amazon UK and Audible UK for your purchases.)
I think you may get a trial period, of maybe around a mopnth. After that you
pay a €7.99 monthly subscription. For that subscription, you get one ‘free’
credit, with which you can buy one audible book. Sometimes there are promotions
for extra credits, like buying three books for the price of two, or sometimes
you get an extra credit for buying something within a defined period.) Now
there are a few different subscription plans for you to choose from. Read about
them on the site.
Books and the ways and means of reading are very much an individual’s own
pursuit, and preferences vary as much as (or more than) the individuals who
choose them. Many people subscribe to Audible for a period of time, then
unsubscribe and spend their money on other things, or save it!
Caveat: I do think that Audible on the PC used to be more accessible than it
currently is, which is why a great number of people prefer to download the
books either to their smart phones or their supported mp3 players, or now onto
their home networked device.
Me, I get books on Kindle, and read them in either Braille or speech, or
both, usually on my PC. (Refreshable braille display.) I bought a few Audible
books, but don’t see myself buying any more for a while.
Still, do use Google, read what people think (if that is your preference),
and look at the sites I mentioned earlier.
Happy New Year, and (however you read or whatever you listen by), happy
reading and listening!

Forgive me, I'm starting from scratch, what's or what do I do to get the
Audible download manager?

Hi Roslyn,
You can use Windows Media Player on your PC. For your PC, you’ll need to
use the Audiible Download Manager to download any books. (If you have any
portable player, such as a Victor Reader Stream or a PlexTalk Pocket, they are
also supported by Audible Download Manager on your PC, through which you link
with them. Audible then first sets up folders on such supported portable
devices.) The iPhone, or even Amazon’s own Alexa, however, are much better
(more easily accessible) options for us than its clunky PC interface.

Hi Tim and Martin,
Thanks very much for your help. I'm starting from scratch here. I don't
have or am not familiar with iTunes.

Hi Roslyn,
You can listen to audible books on your pc, but to be honest the app is a
far nicer experience.
Also you can then listen to books anywhere regardless of whether you have
an Internet connection.
On the pc you can use iTunes to play the book, and I think you also need
to install a separate audible download manager.
You can also stream the book directly from the audible website by going
to your library and hitting play button for the book you want to listen to.
Im not sure how accessible the streaming player is i.e. how easy is it
to move back and forth in the audio, change to a different chapter etc and we
all know how unpleasant iTunes can be to use.
If you are running Windows 10 then I think there is an audible app for
Windows 10 but again I dont know how accessible it is.
Hope this helps.
Tim

Hi List,
Happy New Year.
Sorry could anybody tell me if Audible, for listening to books on, is
accessible via the computer or just a smart phone?
Thanks.
