Gutenberg 3. ambling (lite & paid) 4. audiobooks (which I haven't had time to use yet). With librivox and guenberg, at least, the quality of the reading is unpredictable; sometimes, the reading is more of a performance (including Shakespeare's sonnets which are transformed by the reader's performance and an entertaining lengthy person interpretation of each sonnet; it soon transpires that this reader is making the recording as a result of a Community Service order in the American courts: still excellent and worth a listen; a whole new take on Shakespeare, with the entire original texts in there somewhere - albeit, in a strong New Jersey accent). Reading the Grimms' Fairytales on Gutenberg, 3 our ot the 62 were incomplete. All worth investigating, though, Robbie On Thu, Jan 24, 2013 at 10:27 PM, Noreen Meagher <noreenmeagher@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: Ciaran, Dónal, Cearbhall & Tim, thanks to all for response & have just downloaded IBooks & next searching for books & hopefully I will have holiday reading on my iphone. The app is very accessible and is available free from the AppStore, and links directly to your existing Apple account. Any titles you purchase are downloaded directly to your phone, and are stored in the library section of the app. You can set bookmarks etc just as you can with specialist readers such as the Victor Stream. There's no need to connect the phone to a computer, and no conversion / transferring necessary. One of the biggest disadvantages of iBooks is that the content is in text format, so the books are read to you by voiceover instead of a human voice. This can take a bit of getting used to, however in my experience I have found the American voice to be extremely easy on the ear. You can try it out first to see what you think - there is plenty of free content available on the store. Titles are often a bit more expensive than with other providers, but if you need a book in a hurry, or if you are unable to source it anywhere else, I would definitely recommend iBooks. Hope this helps, Ciaran -----Original Message----- From: vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Noreen Meagher Sent: 23 January 2013 23:41 To: vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [vicsireland] Re: Audio books query Cearbhall, thanks for reply & you have given me some ideas, & as I am already a member of NCBI library I will take that route first. I am only starting with Iphone & looking for a quick solution to get a couple of books on phone before going on hols on 31st. I might even stick with Nano I pod till I get back & have more time for phone then... Are you familiar with this service? If your regular public library is registered with OneClick, you can use the One-click app to download and read their audio books on your iPhone. Similarly, your library might use Overdrive as does the NCBI and this also has an iPhone app called Overdrive which you can download to your iPhone. All of these apps are free. They control the licence to read their books and that is why they have been created for the iPhone. If you like to read books in mp3 format, you can download them to the iPhone using iTunes as "music" and they will be listed under "Music" in the iPhone. There are different ways to transfer them into iTunes and through iTunes into the iPhone so it might be best to respond to specific questions on this technique if they arise. You can transfer audible, One-click and Overdrive books to mp3 format on your desktop computer and then they can be transferred using iTunes into your iPhone. Books in WMA format cannot be read on the iPhone and must be sent through their respective apps to convert them to mp3. If you have any questions on these items I will happily answer as best I can. I use all of them on my iPhone which is a 4S running IOS 6.01.
