Noreen,

Apple's own book store iBooks is probably the quickest way of getting books on
to your iPhone. The app is very accessible and is available free from the
AppStore, and links directly to your existing Apple account.

Any titles you purchase are downloaded directly to your phone, and are stored
in the library section of the app. You can set bookmarks etc just as you can
with specialist readers such as the Victor Stream. There's no need to connect
the phone to a computer, and no conversion / transferring necessary.

One of the biggest disadvantages of iBooks is that the content is in text
format, so the books are read to you by voiceover instead of a human voice.
This can take a bit of getting used to, however in my experience I have found
the American voice to be extremely easy on the ear. You can try it out first to
see what you think - there is plenty of free content available on the store.

Titles are often a bit more expensive than with other providers, but if you
need a book in a hurry, or if you are unable to source it anywhere else, I
would definitely recommend iBooks.

Hope this helps,

Ciaran

Cearbhall, thanks for reply & you have given me some ideas, & as I am already a
member of NCBI library I will take that route first. I am only starting with
Iphone & looking for a quick solution to get a couple of books on phone before
going on hols on 31st. I might even stick with Nano I pod till I get back &
have more time for phone then...

Hello Noreen,

You can use the Audible app to read books from audible.com. Are you familiar
with this service?

If your regular public library is registered with OneClick, you can use the
One-click app to download and read their audio books on your iPhone.

Similarly, your library might use Overdrive as does the NCBI and this also has
an iPhone app called Overdrive which you can download to your iPhone.

All of these apps are free. They control the licence to read their books and
that is why they have been created for the iPhone.

If you like to read books in mp3 format, you can download them to the iPhone
using iTunes as "music" and they will be listed under "Music" in the iPhone.
There are different ways to transfer them into iTunes and through iTunes into
the iPhone so it might be best to respond to specific questions on this
technique if they arise.

You can transfer audible, One-click and Overdrive books to mp3 format on your
desktop computer and then they can be transferred using iTunes into your iPhone.

Books in WMA format cannot be read on the iPhone and must be sent through their
respective apps to convert them to mp3.

If you have any questions on these items I will happily answer as best I can. I
use all of them on my iPhone which is a 4S running IOS 6.01.

All the best,

Cearbhall
