Google is not a charity!

They must make their living somehow!

Yes, and they make a lot of their money from selling advertising. But my point is, the paid-for links on the Google search results page are all within the two sections marked "Sponsored Links", so you know they're adverts. It is not possible to pay for higher rankings within the main Search Results section.
