Of course, linking between sites is a huge help. The more sites you have linking and the more traffic you generate to other sites the more you'll get noticed as the google craller will reach your site faster and more frequently.
This is true, but it's actually stronger than that. It's not just that linkage generates more traffic or more frequent visits from the google indexer. Rather, Google maps out, counts and classifies all "inbound" links to any particular page and this is the cornerstone of its "page ranking" algorithm. The exact algorithm is a google trade secret - not least because thay want to minimise the opportunities for people to "game" the system (i.e., to "artificially" get high rankings). The bottom line is still that the best way to get good "natural" rankings in search engines is simply to provide a very useful, functional, helpful, site that lots of people may be honestly motivated to link to. Separately from this, google "ad word" advertising (and similar services from other search engines) can be very effective marketing mechanism; but even though it is tightly integrated with search engines, it should not be confused with the long term sustained effort required to develop high "natural" rankings in the "normal" search engine results. Just my 2c worth.
