Just to chime in here, 

People have devoted entire books to higher google rankings.  
There are plenty of sites devoted to it as well. 

The keys seem to be: keyword ranking, site markup and the frequency at which 
the site is updated. 

Of course, linking between sites is a huge help.  The more sites you have 
linking and the more traffic you generate to other sites the more you'll get 
noticed as the google craller will reach your site faster and more frequently.

Yes, and they make a lot of their money from selling advertising. But  
my point is, the paid-for links on the Google search results page are  
all within the two sections marked "Sponsored Links", so you know  
they're adverts. It is not possible to pay for higher rankings within  
the main Search Results section.
