When I installed (Windows) Internet Explorer 7, it naturally took over the
shortcuts i had for IE6; so no need to create any new ones.

Hello,
When internet explorer, what do you see in the file menu? Is there anything
there about tabs? If so, you have internet explorer 7.
It's now called windows internet explorer so that is another way of
distinguishing it.
In relation to your firewall, If your new firewall supports the WMI, Windows
Management Interface, XP will automagically turn off it's firewall as it
understands that another, more powerful alternative has been installed.
It shouldn't really matter though if you turn it off or not. I'd perhaps
suggest that you just leave it on and let the software take care of it all.
