Hi Ed, I abandoned the solaris system some time back as it was just one driver problem after another. I found after trying different soundcards that they all had issues and I couldn't get anywhere with it. It seems that if you of course purchase a hardware system from Sun then everything will work and that is the way to go but they sell at very high prices and not worth an investment from my own personal point of view. Currently I am working with linux however which is coming along nicely though screen reader functionality within the X386 "windows GUI" platform has a long way to go before it is up to the standard of screen readers in the microsoft operating systems. The apple voice over product is okay but generally only supports email, word processing and some internet functionality. I have written up a report which Mark in CFIT is going to put up at some point on the CFIT web site and you can read about it there. Hi brian, I am particularly interested in what kind of results you get using dream weaver and also the apple screenreading software. Maybe Paul has tested the solaris software, I know he was going to, but I lost track of where that got to. All the best Ed -----Original Message----- From: vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:vicsireland-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx]On Behalf Of Brian Dalton Sent: 27 June 2006 16:38 To: vicsireland@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [vicsireland] research group. Hi all, I have been given the task of heading up the vics research group once again for the next year. The main purpose of this group is to examine and evaluate new pieces of software which are useful to us as computer users. At present it is comprised of myself, Paul traynor and Loretta Connerty. We are always interested in new members, so if any of you feel that you would like to be part of this group, just give me a shout. Topics we have looked at so far are: Firefox which is a web browser, an alternative to Internet explorer. AVAST, which is a piece of anti virus software and an alternative to AVG. This year we hope to look at the new screen reading software that is used with the apple mack, windows vista and the new versions of office when they are released, as well as Dream Weaver which is used for designing web pages. We are also very interested in hearing what you, the members would like this group to look at. If you have any suggestions for software that you would like us to look at, feel free to drop me a mail. We are also developing an FAQ, (frequently asked questions) page on our website. This is a one stop shop knowledge base where users can get information on technical matters such as: helpful hints on Microsoft applications, settings to use when configuring windows with jaws etc. Once again, if any of you have any tips and tricks that you find useful or a topic you would like to see more information on, please don't be afraid to share this with us. We would like this page to be useful to all our members, from beginners to advanced, so your suggestions are extremely important. That's it for now, Brian. -- No virus found in this incoming message.
