Hi,
I updated to the latest version of the gnome-panel and it seems to have
worked for me. I was experiencing crashes in the speech until I did this. I
experienced no dependancy issues so far.

By the way, have you experienced any problems with the gnome-panel
application? For some reason there seems to be a bug when running GTK
programs from the run dialogue that causes gnome-panel to crash when
accessibility is enabled. It's mentioned on bugzilla and there are a few
work arounds but I haven't tried any of them yet.
I tried upgrading to the latest version of gnome-panel but came across a lot
of problems with dependancies so without upgrading what seems like all of
gnome from source I'm not going to fix it that way.
