Andy.

It's not that Window Eyes is a steap learning curve it's that it's not Jaws
and if you're anything like myself and a heck of alot of others who are
either switching, thinking about switching or have switched I've seen a
pattern that people expect it to behave like Jaws. It's not going to
because it's not Jaws and it forces you IMHo to use your computer more than
Jaws does. That means thinking about what you are doing alot more and not
relying on Jaws to step in and take care of things for you.

I like others for years and years kept going on that I felt I was being
ripped off with Jaws and even now I switch back to Jaws when I get
frustrated with Window Eyes and just need the job to get down. It requires
a bit of patience and more patience than required to just learn how to use a
new application because a screenreader is part of your interface to Windows.

The trouble with demoing a screenreader is your doing just that and it's
easy to get set in your ways of how Jaws, Hal, or even Window Eyes works.

It shouldn't be this way because a screenreader is meant to assist not
dictate how you use your operating system, but I think of it like the OS
wars. Mac Vs, Windows, Vs Linux.

All have their merrits and I like others switching happen to believe that
it's worth the headaches.

It's a bit corny but I like the little motivational phrase,

"The short term pain we endure now, is the long time gain we get in the
future".

You can use elaquince with window eyes. I dont' think it's exactly like the
one in Jaws but you can use it instead of Dectalk Access32 that's on by
default.

Dectalk Access32 is a fantastic synth but it is a bit more robotic and
utilitarian than the likes of Elaquince.

Hi Dave.

So if I wish to move forwards, so to speak, I'll have to go down the Media
Center path, with either JAWS 8 Professional or WindowEyes 6. I know JAWS
is a bit of a pain at times and I do feel that I am being ripped off, every
time I upgrade to a new version, but WindowEyes looks such a huge learning
curve for me. A few weeks ago, I downloaded the latest WE and started
playing about with it. The voice was terrible and I could hardly understand
it. I do understand that a JAWS keyboard can be used to get you started,
but it just seemed a hill too far for me. Perhaps I should look again at
the prog and try and find out as much as I can about Windows Media Center.
I'd have liked XP Home to remain for a couple of years yet, so I could
gradually move on, but if computer stockists have limited numbers of XP Home
computers, I will be left behind very quickly.

Best wishes.
Andy
