Well, Alex, trial and error?  Maybe, but there is also the question of the 
Windows mixer and
whether the mic input is active or muted, and how the gainon the mic input in 
the mixer is
adjusted, so you may have to familiarize yourself with the control panel sound 
applet.

Hi Carol,

I have worked out that I do have a built in Microphone on the PC, however I
believe I do have a microphone socket, however as there are three similar
wholes on the front of the PC and one of them is for headphones, I am sure I
do have a microphone socket, however I am not sure which  of the remaining
sockets it is.

what can I do to find out?
