Agreed on all of this. This is an unsolved problem though. There appear to be 
three approaches: the free for all, moderation, and democracy.

The free-for-all approach degenerates into 4chan. The most obnoxious members 
will slowly drive out those with least tolerance for obnoxiousness, causing the 
Overton window to shift to 4chan norms. That this group hasn’t gotten there yet 
is a testament to the character of the participants.

Moderation degenerates into HuffPo. Moderation is merely giving one man power 
over others, and as we all know, power corrupts, and attracts the corrupt. 
Entryism occurs, snitches and scolds will claim they feel unsafe, back channels 
and whisper networks will form, and in the words of Glenn Reynolds, it will 
degenerate into middle school mean girl lunch table politics.

Democracy is often the least bad solution, but it degenerates into an echo 
chamber.

Again, it’s an unsolved problem that has affected every community I have ever 
been a part of. The more technical and more obscure the community, the higher 
the survival rate, but even those are not immune.

1 a hammer in hand tool
      ( everything turns into nails that need hitting.)

2 quis custos custodiet.
      ( moderation has a tendency to turn into dictatorship
               inside a freshly created echo chamber. )

3 lots of hassle.
       ( IMHO in most cases ignoring the rare (mis)poster
              is preferable.)
