Similarly I once walked unexpectedly in (an invisible) cloud of ammonia gas
caused by a leaky valve. Stings skin too. Stop breathing & run !! The guy
walking next to me was not chemical plant savvy and looked impressed after the
incident.
Ammonia solution is still used for first aid to wake up passed out people:

Had a similar experience with ammonia. Synthesizing a test sample of AP from
perchloric acid & conc aqueous ammonia. Mixed the 2 together and got the
subtlest whiff of the reaction. POW!... it was like a fist extending out from
the beaker.
