Yes it was transportation why they segmented. Also the VAB was closed to
tours during the Shuttle program because of the presence of SRB segments.
Glad that whole morass is over.

Thiokol (UTC?) suffered an explosion while testing a large, monolithic
solid and thereafter switched to segmented solids. Is there any truth
