Hi all,
I'm glad that this information I sent out last week has caused an on-line debate about access to information and access to communication for the deafblind community.

Hello Meredith

I have reading missed page not found website vision Australia much.

Great discussion everyone.
I've just looked on the BCA website and can't find any information about accessible formats so I have emailed them. I also looked on the Vision Australia website and found this link which explains a bit about converting PDFs. I agree with everyone - we need one standard document in easy English which explains the variety of needs of people with deafblindness when accessing electronic information. I have been told by a few people that this information already exists so I'll keep looking for it and let you know what I find. Here is some information from Vision Australia that may be interesting or useful but I want to warn you it is a bit long and complicated about how to convert PDF files.

I will get back to you when I find more information.
Kind regards,
Meredith

UN convention of rights in every situation.
Have a good week.

Hello Heather,

Yes, I understand. Sometimes those of us who have English as first
language use words which don't translate well to Auslan or other
languages. You are right, it is something else we have to think
about. How to say things using clear language.

Stephen

hello all

yeah BCA may have. If we think we would like to write one document
due to deafblind poor english. They sometimes hard to write to explain due to their first langauge Auslan or other low level of english writing. the
document can be written on bhealf of deafblind community. only a
thought.

I willlook at BCA wetsite if I have time.

Thanks Stephen and others

Cheers Heather

Hello Heather, Peter and others,

The idea of a document explaining how to make websites and documents
easier for deafblind to read is a good one. It may take some effort
as some of us have low vision, others are blind, and some have a
degree of hearing. Some of the work may already have been done for
us. I think Blind Citizens Australia (BCA) have some policies on
their website suggesting how web pages should be designed to make
them accessible to people who are blind. There are likely to be
other useful documents about accessible website design and how to
produce accessible documents at other places on the web also.

Regards
Stephen

Hello Stephen

Thank you for that. I will look if it is readiable on my braille
display.

My suggestion if we make one document regards what problems that
Deafblind people have like PDF, tables, colours, etc then we
deafblind can keep the same document to send to any website or
agencies to tell them to make awareness. We need to tell the
world we deafblind are intelligent, can learn any computer
communication but we need fair accessiable on any technology
communciation. Maybe Claire Telleson can help with the written
document. It would save our time to write write write write all
prblem but one document we cankeep in file
and send out whenever.

Wha tyou think

Cheers Heather

Hi Trudy, Heather and Carleeta,

I agree, sending feedback to the website developers to let them
know PDF is not always accessible to everyone and Word format
would help also is a good idea.

For now, I have run the document through a PDF to Word converter
and attach the file I got from it. I don't think it converted
perfectly, but it does look readable using JAWS.

Stephen

Maybe send feedback to the website developers.

I wonder if any deafblind with braille reader have problem open
PDF format.
if yes, we need to be fair to everyone to have same format like
word doc.
It is sometimes not good for me and maybe others did not read
PDF and miss out reading.
