I haven't seen many consumer solutions that do much better than you suggest.

Specialized installations and recordings though I've heard of good enough 
quality they can trick the ear nicely.  I used to have a match strike that 
was frightening it sounded so real.  If I find it I'll forward to you off 
list.
    I'm also assuming you're using good quality listening hardware.
