It works because it is not too ambitious. How much use you can make of it 
depends very much on how much you want to use it.

It is useful for locating objects once you arrive in their vicinity. It can 
be used for finding openings in walls and fences - it stops vibrating when 
you find one. It is very much the sort of device that you have to point. You 
can aim it at the ground a few feet ahead of you and you would find a hole 
but at the same time you would probably walk into a nearby pole or hit 
something at head height. Scanning with it does not really work unless you 
do it really slowly.

There is a long cane that has similar locating potential but I am told that 
you have to walk quite slowly with it to get the best out of it.

I remember these from years ago but wondered if anything existed today
that was similar.  Obviously it didn't work that well else there would be
similar devices.  This minny guide thing seems really interesting though.
