Dear Members
Could you suggest an appropriate configuration for Desktop use, one
that is Linux compliant; driver et al; with names of components
please.
I recently bought desktop hardware for running fedora and everything
looks good so far. The following is the configuration,
1. Asus M5A78L-M LE motherboard (Rs. 2850/-)
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM3Plus/M5A78LM_LE/#specifications
1.1 Realtek 8111E NIC
The default NIC driver for linux r8168 works only at 10Mbps/half duplex
so you will have to download the driver from realtek which unlocks the
full potential. The following is the link to driver download page,

2. AMD Phenom II Quad X4 - 840 (Rs. 5250/-)
Works great, Cool'n'Quiet also works, so automatically throttles CPU b/w
0.8 to 3.2 Ghz.
3. Kingston RAM 2 GB (Rs. 750/-)
4. PC case Qori Q3335 (Rs. 1750/-)

You can probably get the same cabinet at a lower price.
5. Hard disk
With the flood in Thailand, hard disks are expensive right now. So, I am
just running the machine out of a 8 GB flash drive. Although, you should
know, flash drive have very low performance.
If you are looking for hardware which has been reviewed, you should
check out
http://www.phoronix.com/ but cannot guarantee whether you will
find the hardware in Chennai/India.
I prefer AMD chipsets over Intel since they are usually backward
compatible.
