I guess he is asking about hardware configuration. And that
mostly depends on what you will be using the computer for. I still use
a desktop that is P4 with 1 GB RAM running Debian. Suits me for most
of my purposes. But I guess a lot of people now go for more than 3GB
of RAM and intel i5 kind of processors. But to do that, you most
probably have to change your mother board as well.
As for the GNU/Linux compatibility, I guess Ubuntu 11.04 works
on most the most recent hardware. If you are looking at stability and
your hardware is not bleeding edge(i.e. say about more than 6-8 months
since it was introduced), I would recommend Debian Squeeze, or may be
Fedora/CentOS(Ihaven't used these two, so don't know about their
hardware support). Thanks
