I have an acer travelmate 290 series (292 FxCi) that I rather like.
Centrino laptop (ipw2200.sourceforge.net for the centrino drivers), intel
motherboard + video card, ac97 sound card with rather cheesy speakers, an
internal modem that linmodems.org seems to detect just fine, and rtl8139 /
realtek ethernet card.
Slackware 10 worked just fine almost out of the box - had to download and
compile the ipw2200 driver for 2.6.x though (this box now runs 2.6.10 just
great).
Two other things you need - especially with 2.6 and intel's centrino speedstep
- are:
1. cpufreqd -

2. laptop-mode-tools to take advantage of the 2.6 laptop mode -

FC3, Sarge etc should also install just fine on this guy .. and best of all, it
is lightweight, sleek aluminium colored, and ships with RH7.3 preinstalled that
you can format without worrying that your laptop's cost includes the cost of a
licensed windows XP that you're going to format and install linux on top of it.
