I see what you mean. It's a good point. Effectively the behaviour is already there in Jaws' support of role="main". One possibility might be to create a specific quick nav key that took focus directly to the <main> element (or role="main" come to that). Effectively a replacement for a skip to content link. Thinking about it, this might make a better proof of concept in support of the <main> element? It's good to talk these ideas through Sina, thanks. But, I still have the question of, why does this matter? What I mean is, how will mocking this up help? Note, I'm not disagreeing with having a main element. I'm simply asking, the whole point is that the user wont' know the difference, so why not simply mock up with role="main"? Does that question make sense? Yes, it's the <main> element. Sorry, I realise belatedly I didn't mention that. The <main> element will map to role="main". Are you thinking it could be possible to piggy back something off the existing role="main" behaviour in Jaws? So, I have a question. If this is for something like the new discussions around the main element, is there a difference in whether it is a tag versus an aria attribute in the form of a role on a div? I'm just wondering whether or not this could be easily mocked up, saving you time from having to modify jaws scripts at all. I'm happy to discuss more, if you like, and possibly even help. It?s to demonstrate how Jaws might support a new HTML5 element that?s been proposed. I think there are two possible options. Either to modify the script that handles navigation between landmarks on web pages with the semi colon quick nav key, or to write a new script that introduces a new quick nav key based on the proposed element. A potential catch is that this new element doesn?t exist yet, so there is no browser support for it. Jaws would need to take it from the HTML because no information will be available via the browser?s accessibility API. If this is something that?s likely to be browser specific, Firefox is my preferred browser for developing this proof of concept functionality. I?m an occasional Jaws scripter, but it?s been a long time since I used it in anger. I?d appreciate any advice on the best approach to take, scripts/functions I would need to modify, and any pitfalls I should be aware of. I?ve searched the list archives (and will keep trying), but if there is existing information around this anywhere, links and/or reading material happily received as well. Thanks.
