I thought the quick settings aren't saved between jaws runs (certainly
the new screen shade is not). What I described will persist and not
need repeating.

The idea here is that using the JAWS Quick Settings in each application will
not modify the default setting for "all" applications.

Yes, you create different voice profiles (under the jaws menu, jaws+j then
options->voices->voice adjustment, choose the synthesizer you want to use
for the program make the changes and then save as, when you close the dialog
say no to making the different profile your deafault.
With the program you want to assign a profile to active hit
jaws+ctrl+s tab to the list for the program of interest and select the
profile you created above.
