I also get the feeling, based on bill shape and proportions, that this
is a larger gull than a typical Ring-billed Gull.
Using Howell and Dunn (which has incredible photographs of gulls in
flight) I feel that the upperwing pattern is most consistent with
Herring Gull and that the bill shape and proportions are reasonable
for what they refer to as the American Herring Gull. California Gulls
in this plumage usually show a second dark band running the length of
the secondaries and Lesser Black-backed Gulls in this plumage
generally lack the pale window formed by the pale subtips of the inner
primaries.
That is just my two cents, though. Subadult gulls can be, as Gollum
would put it, 'very tricksy'.
