If memory serves, we get the Smithson subspecies, which is smaller than the
other Herring subspecies. I thought the bill in the first picture fit herring,
but haven’t had time to pull references and scratch my head to augment my often
faulty memory. I’m with Rob in that it appeared larger despite the absence of
any size comparison. Don’t ask me why, just an impression.

Thanks Rob – I was considering a Lesser Black-backed Gull since it seemed
larger than the Ring-billed Gulls present but smaller than a Herring Gull
would be. I’m interested to see what others think.

Plumage is fresh-no wear so 1st winter plumage?. Note the light tips of
primaries, secondaries, coverts, and tail. Impression without reference is a
larger rather than medium to small species. The bill seems thicker than
Ring-billed. All black bill is important imo. Too light for 1st winter
Herring? I don’t see any obvious combination of field marks that would
eliminate Herring. Black backs? Possible.
