Let me make that more positive.

I think that 5th gen receivers "as is" do work well enough for the transition to be ended. And I say this in part because of reports of real devices, and in part because we have ended our own transition already, with 3rd gen receivers, indoor and outdoor antennas, with no heroic measures. We no longer use analog TV stations.

Furthermore, shutting off the super powerful analog stations can only help improve everyone's digital reception, even with older receivers. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the majority of reception problems now were caused by a digital station being adjacent to a much stronger analog station.

Furthermore, digital transmitter antennas are now often in the less than ideal location. Lower tower than the analog, or on the side, or otherwise compromised. So what there is can probably be improved with relatively small effort even without improving receivers.

Furthermore, I'm fully confident that receivers will continue to improve, because we already know some things that can be done to improve them, specifically in the training area, and because innovations such as A-VSB are coming on line.

Lastly, there's nothing like the imperative of making things work in the here and now to get it done.

Bert
