Unfortunately, minimizing the number of broadcast stations has always been
180 degrees from their mission under the communications Act. (And, I'm not
saying that they always did it well). Deintermixture, for one, was very
stupid, such as saying that markets like Bakersfield, CA were to be UHF-only
was very stupid.

By my way of calculation, if we had had an 8 mhz system, we would have AT
LEAST 1/3 fewer TV stations than we do today.

That would be an improvement.

No Fox, no WB/UPN/CW. Fewer independents.

Given the social content of the programming provided on most networks and
stations, not having them would definitely be an improvement.

And, we would have had to wait more than a few years later for color - or
early adopters would have had to turn in their non-compatible TV sets for
PAL ones.

If the FCC had allowed the 525 line CBS color system proposed in 1947 with
it's 9 mHz bandwidth to become law, we would have had color then instead of
waiting
for the dumbed down 405 line, lower resolution version that finally got
approved in 1951.

But, the color would have been better!

Yes, the color would have been better either with PAL or the original CBS
color system.
