Field Sequential Color is a form of compression. For the one chip DLP projector it is to reduce complexity of the receiver, but there are now 3 DLP projectors, so the compression is in the form of economics. Also, the ability to "freeze" a field and present three different color but temporally identical fields avoids the rainbow fringing found in the original CBS system and in the NASA system.
And yup, I thought that NASA recently switched their downlink video to NTSC but couldn't find a definitive reference on the web, so I didn't rely on my memory alone. Usually when I do I get hammered on this list by someone!
