And, people will lose jobs at television stations if they delay the transition, since more than a few stations are paying $20,000 per month in electricity to keep old transmitters alive. They budgeted that this amount would disappear on Feb 17. If it doesn't, they will have to lay off people. Actions have consequences. Tripping up plans to appease a few loud laggards (and the luddites at the Consumer's Union) will have consequences. People can prevent the loss of ota television by paying $80, plus perhaps an antenna. Jobs lost in broadcasting will not be so easy to prevent if the transition is delayed, and will probably not be refilled.
