I really can't fathom why "we" are still arguing
about this. It's not like there's a premium to be
paid for storing a movie on an HD-DVD at 1080p rather
than 720p. As long as it fits in the 22 or 25 Gbyte
space available, and is compatible with decoders in
the field.
The 4:4:4 might be a problem. If I have it right,
you'd be dedicating twice as much space to chroma as
you use for luminence, which might put you over the
edge. Not to mention the consumer decoder
compatibility issue.
Craig talks about "economics," but doesn't bother to
explain what the issue is.
