Cliff,
The dumb programs comment of yours intrigues me. I do not know of the
breadth and quality of the numerous programs you have in the USA. However, I
do find certain problems with the format of content in many cases in
programs such as "Discovery" for instance. It is not that the subject matter
is poor. Rather, it is the way it is presented. It appears that it does not
matter if the content involves investigating human gene sequences or
rocketry or the latest advances in fusion reactors. Everything has to be
accompanied by an incessant disco beat in the background which tends to
destroy any impression that such programming is intended as anything other
than light entertainment for 12 year olds. Similarly this rhythm invades the
news - people being blown up in Iraq -thump! thump!, people dying in Africa
thump! thump!. In every case except a documentary on discos and night life
this kind of format is totally inappropriate. Indeed in many areas of
material content the program designers have lost the plot with regard
to what is appropriate.

Having said that I find of the small selection of channels we have here, the
majority are reasonably entertaining and/or informative.
Barry
