Hi All, At the risk of being unpleasantly savaged again by Mr Macdonald and being called un-American which I am sure the many people I know in the US would dispute I can shed some light on this. Europe went through an ugly and unpleasant trade war with Japan over the HDTV system in the 80's until early nineties. The European and Japanese CE companies watched in horror as the ATSC grand plan evolved. The Computer lobby waded in, the story at the time was that the chairman of the FCC Reed Hunt was a school friend of Bill Gates and slowed everything down to allow MS to catch up. Zenith shareholders must have made a fortune by lobbying to save the last US CE manufacturer then dumping the company on our Korean friends as soon as VSB was cemented in place. Worst of all was the plan by the ATSC to convert the world to ATSC thus breaking up decades of trade arrangements between European companies and their ex colonies. The ATSC machine was brash, arrogant and hardened the attitudes against ATSC. I personally warned Robert Graves and Mark Richer that there would be a huge backlash if they made another fight like Europe Verses Japan. There was also at this time a lot of collateral to prove that COFDM was superior to VSB. The Irony is as Steven Long has said many times on this list that COFDM is also an American Invention. The ultimate result was the commercial cooperation of many entities to make DVB a success and keep ATSC at bay including the very European and Japanese companies who had wasted a fortune on the previous battle. Perhaps the lack of product form the inheritor of the technology is that the technology cupboard was in fact bare and they are too embarrassed to say so.
