>I just want to point out that there out to be 16 million or so unique values for the 3 byte field (allowing even for the possibility that some of the possible values are illegal). So are all the manufacturers releasing 16 million network cards? Methinks they are just doing a bad job in the manufacturing process. One example: http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/server/STL2/sb/CS-007538.htm As for datacast boards, I can think off the top of my head of one manufacturer (no longer with us, RIP) that created all boards with the same MAC address. 'But we let you change it in the registry' was the excuse. The original topic of this thread was re utilizing the MAC address for unique, non-modifiable identification of end receivers to deliver content to. I think we can conclude that for all intent purposes this fails to meet both criteria, and users can compromise the system by simply changing their own MAC address. So it is in effect rendered useless.
