I fully agree that we do not need to use GIF instead of PNG anymore 
since all contemporary browser support PNG. OTOH, SVG is only supported 
by a few very recent browsers. I suggest to use JPEG for the maps 
included in the books (just as we did with all other maps so far). We 
can still provide a larger version of the map in some other format for 
separate download. Still I think for the final versions of the maps 
(regardless of the size) JPEG is still the most suitable format. Unless 
we use extremely high compression nobody will notice a difference 
between the JPEG version and the PNG version.

Of course JPEG must not be used for storing intermediate results, but 
apparently Simon already knew that. So we are preaching to the 
choir. :-)
