One tip:
never use JPEG format for a map like this, it munges all the straight lines
and edges (and text)
with compression artefacts.
Use a lossless compression format such as PNG.

Thank you for working on this. I didn't mean to insult your previous
work. It probably just needs to be scanned at very high resolution,
then reduced - which you were probably already planning to do. :)
OK, I have a second version of the 01hh map available here:

It's still at 400dpi and huge (almost 1Mb), but I think the labels are
much more legible this time around. However, the labels would obviously be
better if they were removed and then replacement labels generated using
graphics software. Since Jon has said he'll be unavailable for a while, I
might go ahead and try to do this. But I'm interested in any feedback
irrespective of whether we replace the labels or not.
