Looks good.

One thing you can do with PNG, which will usually drastically reduce filesize, is use "paletted" colours. For a map like that, where there's really only a dozen or so block colours intended (I suspect that the variations are more due to vaguaries of ink take-up on the paper stock, and the scanning process), it should be fairly easy to define them all
as palette colours.
You can do this in Paint Shop Pro.
Should be a much smaller file than a 24-bit colour PNG.

I dropped the number of colours down to 32,000. (The next option was a massive drop down to 256 colours, which was fine for the actual map, but made the surrounding illustrations look poor.) What I consider to be the final version is now here: <http://www.projectaon.org/staff/simon/FW01HH_Map(New)2(NewLabels)3(200dpi,%2032K%20colours).png>

Barring the need to move labels around it's ow done. I'm also working on doing the same to the maps for FW2-4. 2 and 3 are mostly done, and I hope to get 4 done over the weekend.

I'm sure it sounds very geeky, but it's surprisingly enjoyable to restore these maps--and more than just restore, make them usable! Why did they choose the same colour red for roads as for altitude/military reservations? The roads literally disappear at some points! These will be fixed . . . :-) I'll post links to those when they're done.

Oh! And before I forget, can someone with knowledge of US geography help me out, please? According to the text of 01HH, DC1 are travelling to Big Spring. According to the map, it is called Big Springs. Which is right?
