as far as I can recall,
Joe Dever introduced/explained the Special Item limit in a Lone Wolf Club Newsletter by saying "it just didn't seem realistic to be carrying all those goodies around" (and that this influenced the "progressive encumbrance" aspect of the Freeway Warrior rules)

You may already have looked into this, but could the statuette (notice the "-ette") not perhaps be just a little minature? cf. the Effigy of the Akraa Neonor from Ikaya? And if it is made of a light stone (as opposed to granite or sthg) it could be both, say, palm-sized and pretty light. In which case, your backpack may be the most sensible
place to put it, but Dever might conceed it wouldn't merit taking up space.

My recommendation is that we standardize on the following:

"If you wish to keep this Statuette of _____, mark it on your Action
Chart as a Special Item which you keep in your Backpack. If you
already carry the maximum number of Special Items allowed, you must
discard one item in its favour."
But if it is a Special Item stored in the Backpack, why discard another
Special Item in its favour, since other Special Items are /not/ stored in
the Backpack?

Well, why is there a limit on Special Items at all, and why do some
very small ones count against this limit while some don't? :-)
I'm afraid that there is no item-logistical logic here, only game mechanisms.

I don't buy it! :-p

If you kept this in your pocket (you'd need very big pockets and) you'd have to discard whatever was already in your pocket. If you keep it in your Backpack, it shouldn't count toward your Special Items limit because it isn't taking up any "space" that has been allocated for other Special Item storage, IMHO. If anything, you should need to discard a Backpack Item if you're already carrying 10 to fit the statuette in there--but that starts getting unnecessarily confusing. Surely it's better to remove the source of the confusion.
