Notice the "while" which I think puts the finishing touch on your
suggested wording, Ingo.

I've implemented this and a couple of Dewi's comments. Most of the last hour has been spent on Books 8-16 replacing the <a ...> footnote markers with <footref ...> elements. That was excruciatingly boring, but at least it now appears to be done. 

A few queries coming up later . . .
