Yup, what I've been saying...

I'm sure they were sure they could get the first down. But if they go for it,
and pick it up, they still have to run more plays to score. With only one time
out left, how much time do you use getting into the end zone? Then you also
use your last time out and don't get the ball back at all. Kick the field goal
to preserve what time you can and hope for the best.

Ok, coupla things.
A) The distance to gain includes fractions of yards. You aren't "awarded" a
yard until you've gained the entire yard. So if it's (say) 2nd down and 3-1/2
yards to go, it's expressed as "2nd and 4".
So if last night's down and distance was "3rd and 5", and subsequently, after
the incompletion, "4th and 5", that 5 should INCLUDE any fractional yard.
;;
B) regardless of what became of the penalty and a first down... should've gone
for it on 4th and short. The idea that "we need a TD and a FG, might as well
get the FG now " is BS. Going for the FG is another failed drive to take back
to the bench in your head. Besides, with time short, you want to be going for
less distance to get into FG range.
And dammit, if you can't make a yard for a 1st down when you need to, you don't
deserve to win! How many first downs did Brisset get on sneaks? Buckle up your
chinstrap, bury your shoulder, and pump your legs, Mitchell.

I won’t argue this much more, but my point about taking the FG and then going
onside was, I believe, the correct coaching decision. Two comments in response
to what I’ve heard on this: 1) just because the down is “announced” as fourth
and 5 doesn’t mean it’s exactly five yards, so a 5-yard penalty doesn’t
guarantee a first down; 2) those of you arguing simultaneously to go for it on
fourth down and also preserve clock would probably also gripe about either a) a
passing play that potentially fails for a variety of known reasons, or b) a
running play that succeeds and eats up a notable chunk of clock.
The team needed two scores to win. A TD would have been preferable first, but
take your FG, you’ve got to do an onside kick regardless, so get on with it,
and then try to get your TD and get the heck out of town. Tomlin indeed was
playing to win last night, in that scenario.

You don't often get email from jasalim@xxxxxxxxx<mailto:jasalim@xxxxxxxxx>.
Learn why this is important<https://aka.ms/LearnAboutSenderIdentification>
Since it was a scoring play, shouldn't they had the option to assess the
penalty on the kickoff ? Or is that only for penalties on PATs ?
They would have saved seconds from the clock and tried the onside kick five
yards ahead.

I didn't finish college, but 4th down and FIVE minus FIVE yard penalty *should*
make the second attempt play 4th and 0, AKA 1st and ten??

Shouldn't that be a first down by penalty?
Or, if it was a "fat" 5 yards to go, wouldn't it then be 4th and inches? Giving
them a shot at to sneak for the first?
I'm missing something obvious, right? Be gentle with me.
