Okay so my doc/Dependencies looks more like this (missing some items compared
to the list you just gave):

automake
build-essential
ccmake
dssi-dev
fluid
libboost-dev
libcairo2-dev
libfftw3-dev
libfltk1.3-dev
libglu1-mesa-dev
libjack-jackd2-dev
libjpeg-dev
libmxml-dev
libxft-dev
libxinerama-dev
libxml2-dev
pkg-config
xutils-dev

I installed all the packages in your list except cmake-curses which could not
be found in my reps. I installed cmake-curses-gui instead (which I assume is
a stupid attempt but eh)

That's correct. It was just abbreviated. However, as it caused confusion I'll
change it in future.

You might have slightly different versions of the other packages.
Try searching for libncurses then find a possibly different numbered one with
the .dev on the end.
Also do the same for readline and zlib

and re-re-tried the build. This is the error I got:

CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake-3.2/Modules/FindPkgConfig.cmake:344
(message):
A required package was not found
Call Stack (most recent call first):
/usr/share/cmake-3.2/Modules/FindPkgConfig.cmake:506
(_pkg_check_modules_internal)
CMakeLists.txt:470 (pkg_check_modules)

If you have one last idea, I will welcome it but I don't want to waste to
much of your time.

I think adding the above packages will sort this out - certainly they are
needed. Cmake can be a bit strange sometimes and quotes the wrong line for
errors :(

It's no trouble to me. If there are problems for someone unfamiliar with the
setup then I want to get it sorted for the next person. More to the point, I
don't want *you* to have wasted time.
