As I understand it, if the licence is strictly GPLv2 only (not GPLv2
or later), that's not compatible with GPLv3 in the same program.

Ok. As I read that, changing my stuff from gpl3 to "gpl2 or later" should
work? But then having put my stuff out as gpl3, can I now change the licence
terms on my sources???

Paul changed the original license from GPL2 to GPL2 or later some time ago.

If you check the archives I think you will find this is mentioned on the Zyn
list.
