And just to add, if you do an Alt F4 when on the desktop the Windows shutdown dialog should appear.

Sorry I can't help with your actual Windows key issue but when start menu doesn’t appear you could try to Alt Tabb to the desktop and then press the Windows key again.

HTH a bit.

Carol,

I don't know the solution, but there is another key combination which
will get you to the start button. Press control+escape. That has the
same effect as pressing the Windows key and works with all keyboards. I
guess it's there for keyboards which don't have a Windows key.

Hi all,

Well, I finally solved two longstanding computer related problems this
week but one remains ...

Our laptop often loses its Start Menu. What I mean is that the Windows
key no longer goes to the start menu but operates normally for all other
keystrokes. This means that the only way to shut down is usually to
perform a Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to Users, log off, then go back into Windows
and get out normally.

Has anyone any idea what might be the cause and/or solution for this
one, please?

Thanks, as always, for any help offered.
