Thanks my friend.

I'll get on and give it some needed maintenance.

Hi carol.

When it happens pop in to task manager. On the processes tab end explorer.exe if its there. Then go to the applications tab and go to new task. In the box type explorer.exe and enter and that should restore your start menu and task bar. Upgrading or reinstalling I e may also help.

Hope that helps,

Mo.

    John,

Yes, it's XP and I have felt it was because Internet Explorer crashes,
or appears to just "sit there".

Whether it's a virus - well, not to my knowledge and I use the usual
    packages and check regularly.

Yes, the task bar also disappears.

Would you recommend a re-install or repair of IE then?

Carol, You don't say which version of Windows you are using,
but this used to happen sometimes in XP. It is normally caused
by Windows Explorer crashing or some other event or even a
virus. Does the start menu come back when you reboot? I assume
that along with the start menu the task bar has also
disappeared?< br /> John. -----Original Message----- From:

        access-uk@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [access-uk] AN INFURIATING
LAPTOP PROBLEM Hi all, Well, I finally solved two longstanding
computer related problems this week but one remains ... Our
laptop often loses its Start Menu. What I mean is that the
Windows key no longer goes to the start menu but operates
normally for all other keystrokes. This means that the only
way to shut down is usually to perform a Ctrl+Alt+Del, go to
Users, log off, then go back into Windows and get out
normally. Has anyone any idea what might be the cause and/or
solution for this one, please? Thanks, as always, for any help
offered. Carol P ** To leave the list, click on the
