Hi carol.

When it happens pop in to task manager. On the processes tab end explorer.exe 
if its there. Then go to the applications tab and go to new task. In the box 
type explorer.exe and enter and that should restore your start menu and task 
bar. Upgrading or reinstalling I e may also help.
