Steve,

I don't want to start a war on here but the suggestion that the only thing you can do with NVDA is quote: 'write the odd letter' is just nonsense.

NVDA also has no copy protection, they trust you to download it a squillion times and the price tag is still zero.

As for you get what you pay for...the reason I stopped using Supernova is I knew more about it than the guys on their helpdesk.

Hi Mike,

All well and good, but NVDA is not very good for corporate use. For
example, I use Sage Line 50 which NVDA won't touch, yet Window-Eyes works
with it pretty much out of the box. You get what you pay for for sure.

Sure, NVDA is OK if you want to write the odd letter and stuff, but to get
it to work with some programs, you have to do some pretty serious scripting
as it has no OSM.

So while NVDA is great as is open source, don't run away with the idea that
it is a panacea. I couldn't do without Window-Eyes in my job.

All the best

Steve

Terry,

I've been in IT for over twenty years so I've come across the resistance
to certain things, free things, being installed on corporate platforms,
but I would guess that most of the IT managers that make such rules are
also, at the same time using several Open Source tools such as server
operating systems, web server applications etc. The take up of Firefox
also suggests this.

Likely opposition is probably going to be that with a purchased product
you get guaranteed support. But in my experience that leaves a lot to
be desired.

There are lists for support of NVDA and for developers too. The
user-base is increasing quickly.

I will never go back to paying for access software for the desktop as
long as a viable alternative exists.

There is no way that being visually impaired should mean you pay 3 or 4
times the cost of your PC just to make it possible for you to use it.

And of course there's the endless upgrade treadmill. I'd equate these
software vendors with drug dealers who give the first few fixes to
customers knowing they will get hooked and come back for more at an
inflated price.

I do use nvda from time to time and find it reasonably okay, though not as
smooth as jfw.

I've used jaws since version 3.2, and have probably spent several
thousands
of pounds over the years.

I'd also have to find out if my employer would allow it on their systems.

Knowing them as I do, the answer would probably be no.

Out of interest though, is there anyone on the list who uses nvda on a
large
network at work?

Thanks

Terry

Hello Terry,

Why don't you give NVDA a try before you commit to spending another wadge
of
cash?

It's easy to download and install and most of the key-bindings are the
same
as those for Jaws.

http://www.nvda-project.org/

There is a vibrant and lively support forum also.

Hi all

I won't bore you with my rant about having to keep asking for my dam
jaws keys to be re-setby FS, as it's long.

What I wanted to know, is how window eyes is activated and or authorised.

Is it the same annoying method that FS use, or a sensible mainstream
method, i.e. you are provided with a serial number, and can install it
on your own pc as many times as you choose.

Thanks for any help.

Terry

Hi Andy

For the moment I'm only using the Scandisk Clip+ for a trial period. I
don't think this device has any more than track ability available. If
I get on well with using extra books I am considering the Victor Reader
Stream.

Hi Roger

If you are using a victor stream or perhaps a booksense, you can
rewind by 1 minute or 5 or 10 and even up to 30 on the stream, not
sure about the booksense, how would this work on the plextalk pocket I
wonder?

Subject: [access-uk] Audible Books

Hi All

I've just joined the Audible UK book library and have just downloaded
my first book. Quite a long one at 32 hours and only in 4 parts. This
means if I need to go back over ground already read I can only do so
by going back to the start of the current track which are around 8
hours long. It would be just great to break these down into smaller
tracks but the file format is .aa which I understand is Audible's
encrypted system which is not breakable by any software available.

If this is correct does anyone know of a solution to my problem, please.

Many thanks

Roger
