Hi Martin

Thanks for these links.

Is it necessary then for administrator settings to be enabled for all
computers on a network? I thought if the wired PC had this, the laptop would
just connect with full access, instead of this limited access tsatus that it
has been showing. I mean, what would happen if I took the laptop in to a
wireless hotspot and wanted to connect, I wouldn't know the IP address for
the hotspot!

At the moment, I can't even get it to connect to the network, this has
happened sinse I unplugged the Ethernet cable from the PC and plugged it in
to the laptop, and then back in to the P C. Do you think I've messed the
network up by doing this? I didn't change the port on the router, leaving
the cable plugged in to the original one -

Andy

| As I mentioned earlier I know nothing of vista but according to the
article
| at http://www.lockergnome.com/windows/2006/10/18/configure-tcpip-in-vista/
| it seems the same as xp. The only reason I can think of as to why the ip
| configuration area is not available is that your administrator priveleges
| have not been enabled. You can follow the instruction shown at
| http://www.tech-faq.com/enable-windows-vista-administrator-account.shtml
to
| check this and change settings if required.
|
| As well as the ip address you'll need to enter your subnet mask which you
| will be able to get via your router or if you fire up your PC, go to a
| command prompt by start menu, run, and type in cmd. when in the command
| window type in ipconfig. Your ip address and subnet mask will be
| displayed. To exit from the command prompt just type in exit.
