As with a lot of political posturing -- not least among the examples being Project Apollo -- the point of the exercise is showmanship, not utility.

(Although showmanship is in the eye of the beholder, and the intended audience isn't always impressed. Churchill sent HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse to the Far East in Dec. 1941 in an attempt to intimidate the Japanese, and instead set the stage for the first clear-cut proof that fully manned and ready capital ships really could be sunk by air attack.)
